Cull

The Power of the "Cull":
Keeping Our Space (and Minds) Clear
A Daily and Weekly Routine
(First Day of Class), Hi everyone! Today, being the first day of class I am going to share a new "power word" I will using in our classroom because I like a clean, well run, room: the word is Cull.
It sounds a bit fancy, but it’s actually a fantastic tool for keeping our classroom and our personal workspace organized and stress-free. To cull simply means to look through a group of things and carefully choose what to keep and what to let go.
Why do we do it?
Culling isn’t just about "cleaning up" or throwing things away. It’s about making sure only the most useful and special items are taking up our valuable space. Think of it like this:
The Library: A librarian culls old, torn books to make room for brand-new stories.
The Garden: A gardener culls weeds so the biggest, healthiest flowers have enough room to grow.
Our "Cull Challenge" is a daily routine. Instead of just "cleaning," we are turning cleaning and organization into a mission:
The 10-Minute Cubby Cull on Fridays: We will set the timer for 10 minutes. You will remove your cubbies, hunt for "junk" (like dried-up markers or scrap paper) to remove, and "treasures" to keep neatly.
The Boxboard Team: Each day, a two-student volunteer team culls our cardboard and craft supplies to keep the pile from getting messy.
The "Maybe" Box: If a student isn't sure about an item, it goes into our "Cull Later" box. If we don’t miss it or use it within a month, we know it’s officially time to let it go.
By making "culling" a part of our daily routine, we will learn that a tidy space and classroom leads to a focused, happy mind!
