Hardboard
Meet Hardboard—the superhero of the wood world! Some people call it "Masonite," which sounds like a secret agent name, right?
It’s named after William Mason, the guy who actually invented it by accident! Back in 1924, he went to lunch and accidentally left a steam machine running. When he came back, his wood chips had been smashed into a super-tough board. Best mistake ever!
Here is why hardboard is the "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) for building:
1. It’s Tougher Than a T-Rex Hardboard is made by squishing wood fibers together with crazy high heat and pressure. It’s way stronger than regular wood or cardboard.
Because it’s so dense, it doesn’t dent easily, and it won’t crack or split when you hammer a nail into it!
2. The "Toast" Test ??There are two main types: Untempered and empered.
Untempered is like a plain slice of bread—soft and simple.
Tempered (the kind I use!) is like a piece of toast with a little oil. It’s darker, harder, and doesn’t get soggy if it gets wet.
3. Smooth as Glass ?One side is usually super slippery-smooth. This makes it the "King of Surfaces" for painting masterpieces, making drawingboards, blackboards, or even building fast skateboard ramps and ping-pong tables!
4. It’s a Planet-Saving. It’s made from leftover wood chips and sawdust that would usually be thrown in the trash. Plus, it uses the wood’s own natural "glue" to stay together, so it’s not full of icky chemicals.
Quick Pro-Tip: Because hardboard is so tough, it’s a bit tricky to cut. If you’re ready to start a project, grab a "Woodworking Wizard" (aka an adult with some tools) to help you slice it!

This is a 1m X 1m blackboard that I made from 6mm thick hardboard. I used this board every day in my classroom.
