What is Masking Tape?
Masking tape is a special type of sticky tape. It is made of thin paper that sticks when you press down on it. Because it is thin, it is very easy to tear by hand or cut with scissors.
To get the best results, you should always cut the tape to the right length using scissors. This makes your work much more precise and helps save material so you do not waste it!
Choosing Your Size and Style
Masking tape comes in many different widths. In our class, we use three specific sizes: 2 cm wide, 2.5 cm wide, and 4 cm wide tape.
You can easily customize your tape by adding color or labels with a marker! Plus, masking tape can be recycled when you are done.
If you want to make a permanent project, use a roller over the tape. This strengthens the joint and helps it stick tightly to paper.
Tan Masking Tape
Tan tape is best for light, temporary tasks like labeling things. The glue on tan tape dries out quickly and becomes brittle over time. If you leave it on too long, it will leave a messy, sticky residue behind.
It also absorbs liquids easily, meaning it gets soggy if you try to paint over it.
Green Masking Tape
Green masking tape has a much stronger grip and peels off cleaner than tan masking tape, making it perfect for your classroom projects.
Green tape is usually painter's tape, which is made with a special acrylic glue. This glue holds tightly but releases smoothly without ripping your surfaces. It is also water-resistant, so it stays strong even if you use wet paint or glue nearby.
Working with Boxboard
Boxboard is stiff but bends easily, which means your structural joints need a very strong hold to keep your cardboard boxes from springing open. Green tape provides that strong grip on rough paper surfaces.
Even better, because boxboard layers tear easily, green tape can be peeled off safely without ripping your hard work apart. Use it to secure your joints so your structures do not fold or collapse!
