Pencil
The Mechanical Pencil
Pencil lead acts as a lubricant so it's easy to move a pencil across paper.
Because it is not actually made of lead—it is made of a slippery mineral called graphite which is a lubricant.
A lubricant is anything that reduces friction and helps things slide together smoothly.
Graphite is a very special material that naturally acts like a pile of microscopic playing cards, allowing parts to glide past each other with ease.
The Science of Slippery "Lead"
The material inside your pencil is a mix of graphite and clay. Graphite is made of carbon, which is the exact same ingredient found in diamonds! However, the carbon atoms inside graphite are arranged completely differently.
The Deck of Cards Pattern
In graphite, the atoms form flat, thin layers. The connections between these layers are incredibly weak.
Easy Sliding
Because the layers are barely holding onto each other, they slide and break apart at the slightest touch.
When you write on paper, the friction from the page easily shears off the top layer of graphite. Those tiny, slippery sheets slide right onto the paper, leaving behind the dark mark you see.
Because it slides so easily, your pencil glides across the page without catching or dragging.
How People Use Graphite as a Real Lubricant
Graphite is so good at sliding that scientists and mechanics use it as a "dry lubricant" outside of the classroom:
Door Locks
If a key gets stuck in a lock, spraying oily liquid inside might attract dirt and clog it up. Instead, locksmiths squirt fine graphite powder inside. The key will slide right in!
Zippers
If you have a jacket zipper that keeps sticking, rubbing a pencil tip over the zipper teeth leaves behind slippery graphite layers that help the zipper glide.
Why the 0.9mm Size Matters
Try to use a 0.9mm lead because it is much thicker than standard 0.5mm or 0.7mm mechanical pencil leads.
Because graphite is a slippery lubricant, thin leads snap very easily if you push down too hard.
The thicker 0.9mm lead gives you a strong, sturdy tip. This lets you write smoothly and sketch your MST designs without the lead constantly breaking!
