A hand-held pencil sharpener is like a woodworking plane because both tools use the exact same simple machine—a wedge—to shave away thin layers of wood. When a woodworker pushes a hand plane across a rough board, a flat metal blade slices off curly ribbons of wood to make the surface smooth and flat.
A small, rectangular pencil sharpener does almost the exact same thing! Inside its body, there is a tiny, flat metal blade angled precisely against a conical hole.
