The Homework Assignment
Remember your first assignment where you organized your family to help you? You all worked together to carefully break down cereal boxes and create a logical system to store them flat inside a cloth recyclable shopping bag. That was an excellent exercise in organization and spatial thinking!

Now, it is time for your next MST mission. Your new assignment is to collect as many round plastic caps and covers as you can find. Look for caps from orange juice cartons, liquid soap bottles, water bottles, and even the large lids from coffee cans.Clean the items and throw them in your collection bag.

You will need to bring your collection straight to the classroom when you arrive at school. Make sure to sort them and place them into the appropriate small or large cubby bins so our workspace stays organized and ready for action.
We are going to use your awesome collection of round caps in two cool ways. First, we will use them to sketch and design brand-new project blueprints. Second, we will use the physical caps to construct models directly in our hands-on work area.
As you start searching, keep your eyes peeled for one specific prize. You will notice that the most important cap for you to look for is a Tide laundry detergent cap with a push button. Look at the four labeled drawings above! First, you will see the complete blueprint for Bookmark Two. Right below it, I broke that big blueprint down into three smaller parts. This makes it super easy to see how to draw it and helps you master the math calculations step by step.
Pay close attention to the labels on every single drawing. You cannot solve a mystery if you do not know what your clues mean!
To keep our engineering notes clean, we are going to use secret codes as a map for our brains! The master label B2B stands for "Bookmark Two Blueprint," which is our complete master drawing.
To break it down into easier pieces, we use B2BSC1 for Semi-circle One, B2BSC2 for Semi-circle Two, and B2S for the middle rectangular section, which forms a shape called a Stadium.
Imagine standing at the starting gate of a blazing-fast BMX race track—this track is shaped exactly like a geometric Stadium!
A stadium shape is made when you take two straight, parallel lines and cap the ends with two curved semi-circles. As the gate drops, you explode down the first straightaway, (B2S) gripping your handlebars tight as your family cheers you on from the sidelines.
You fly over a dirt double-jump, feeling the pure awesome rush of clearing it perfectly! To tackle the curved end of the track, you need the exact right speed: you stop pedalling, lean hard, and bank smoothly into the giant semi-circle turn, (B2BSC1) using that curved wall to whip your bike around.
Finally, you straighten your wheels, lean back, and blast down the second parallel straightaway toward the finish line!
Instead of writing out long, boring titles every time, these short labels instantly separate our big master plan into simpler, bite-sized shapes that make problem-solving a breeze!

To keep your design project on track, think of your zippered binder as your personal studio and your zippered pencil holder as your tool chest.
Start by snapping your pencil holder into the binder rings. This keeps your mechanical pencil, pencil crayons, sharpener, eraser, and 15cm ruler always ready for junior artisan designing.
Next, place your 1cm grid sheet inside the plastic sleeve to protect it from rips and spills. Clip it right behind your tool chest so your blueprint is easy to find.
Every time you finish working on your bookmark plan, zip your pencil holder shut. Fully close your main binder to lock your ideas safely inside and place your binder in it's proper place until you are ready to work again!
