Linear length is the straight-line distance from one point to another, and you can easily remember it because the word "linear" has the word "line" hidden inside it.

Whenever you use a ruler to measure how long, tall, or wide something is in one single direction, you are finding its linear length.

Because it only tracks one direction, it is considered one-dimensional. This makes it different from two-dimensional area, which measures flat surfaces like a tabletop, or three-dimensional volume, which measures the space inside a cube.

You see and use linear length in your everyday life all the time. Your height from the floor to the top of your head is a linear length, and so is the distance from the starting line to the finish line of a running track.

Even if you are measuring a curved sidewalk or a winding garden path, the linear length is how long that path would be if you could magically stretch it out into a perfectly straight line.

To measure these distances, people use tools like standard rulers,  or flexible tape measures.

Depending on what you are measuring, you will use different units to describe the length. For smaller things like a pencil, you might use centimeters. For much longer distances, like the trip from your house to your school, you would use larger units like kilometers.

Sometimes you might hear adults use the term "linear centimeters" when they are packing bags for an airplane trip. In the travel world, airlines use a special math trick where they measure a suitcase's length, width, and height, and then add those three separate numbers together into one single total. This gives them a combined linear number that helps them quickly check if a piece of luggage is small enough to fit safely inside the plane.
