Designing Bookmark One

Making  Bookmark One is going to be an exciting part of studying MST! You are going to learn how to become a true artisan by designing and making your very own custom bookmark  for free. Along the way, you will discover how to design cool structures, construct strong models, and draw and cut perfect straight lines. You will also practice measuring the perimeter around the outside of your shape, calculating the area of the space inside, and mapping out sharp angles and neat miter joints. Finally, you will bring your ideas to life by drawing a complete, professional designer's blueprint!

Bookmark Two Introduction
Making Bookmark One was an exciting start to our year! You learned to think like true artisans by mastering blueprint design, finding the four vertex corners, and drawing precise diagonal lines.

You put your math skills to work by measuring the perimeter and calculating the surface area of your custom bookmark.

Using just a pencil, a ruler, graph paper, and scissors, you turned a simple idea into a physical creation. Now, it is time to level up your MST skills!

    Bookmark Two: Engineering Curves!
This project uses the exact same rectangular base as your first bookmark, but with an exciting engineering twist.

Instead of sharp corners, you will transform the straight edges into smooth, round semicircles. To design this new layout, you will keep using your rulers, but you will also add a circle template to create two perfectly identical circular ends.

           Your Tools for Precision
You will use pencil crayons to map out and draw your final designs. Pencil crayons are the ultimate tool for junior artisan designers because they give you total control. They create thin, crisp edges for high precision, and they allow you to blend colors simply by changing your hand pressure. Best of all, they can be easily erased if you make a mistake or need to adjust a measurement.

The Math Behind the Curve
Get ready to master the curve and conquer the math of circles! By the time you finish this project, you will understand radius, diameter, circumference, and the magical mathematical constant known as
Pi
(        ).

You will also learn two brand-new engineering formulas to calculate, with a calculator, the exact area and perimeter of round shapes. Get your tools ready, because it is time to build another great project!
